Mr. Freeze returns to Gotham after the disruption of his cryogenic refuge puts his wife's life in danger, and he sets out to save her by finding a compatible donor. The blood he needs belongs to Barbara Gordon, Commissioner Gordon's daughter, who also fights crime as Batgirl. Freeze takes her captive, leaving Batman and Robin to track her down before any procedure can go ahead. The film is an animated action and crime story set in the same Gotham City as Batman: The Animated Series, and it builds on the version of Mr. Freeze established in that series.
Boyd Kirkland directed, and he wrote the screenplay with Randy Rogel, with both also producing. This was the first of two features Kirkland directed, followed years later by Happily N'Ever After 2. Kevin Conroy voices Bruce Wayne and Batman, Michael Ansara voices Victor Fries, Loren Lester voices Dick Grayson, and Mary Kay Bergman voices Barbara Gordon, with Robert Costanzo and Mari Devon among the credited voice cast of twenty-one.
The film runs sixty-seven minutes and was released in 1998 by Warner Bros. Animation with DC Comics. Audiences rate it fairly well, at 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB, while a smaller group of critics places it at 6.6 out of 10, a mildly lower figure that still points to a generally favourable response for a direct-to-video animated feature.
