Lee Yong-gu is a man with the mind of a six-year-old, living contentedly with his young daughter Ye-seung and working as a parking attendant at a supermarket. Their world collapses when he is linked to the death of the police chief's daughter and, unable to defend himself properly, is convicted and sent to a maximum-security prison. Inside, he is placed in cell number seven alongside hardened inmates, who initially find his behaviour bewildering.
Miracle in Cell No. 7 was directed by Lee Hwan-kyung, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kim Hwang-seong and Kim Yeong-seok. It stars Ryu Seung-ryong as Yong-gu, with Park Shin-hye as the grown Ye-seung and Kal So-won as her younger self. Jung Jin-young, Oh Dal-su and Park Won-sang appear among a credited cast of forty-two. The blend of comedy and drama runs 128 minutes and was released in January 2013.
The film performed strongly, taking around 80 million US dollars worldwide, a large return that showed how widely the story travelled beyond Korea. On TMDB it holds 7.9 out of 10 from more than five hundred votes, indicating a generally positive audience response.
