Short description

The Look of Love tells the story of Paul Raymond, the British businessman who became known as the King of Soho. Starting in the late 1950s, he opened a members-only club and staged revues featuring nude performers, at a time when such entertainment scandalised conservative Britain. From there he moved into publishing adult magazines and buying up property across Soho, accumulating a fortune that made him the wealthiest man in the country. Alongside his public success, the film follows his marriage to Jean and his affair with Fiona, a star of his shows, and his relationship with his daughter Debbie, who wanted to follow him into the business.

Michael Winterbottom directed, working from a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh. The film is the twelfth of fifteen features Winterbottom has directed, coming between Everyday and Greed. Steve Coogan plays Raymond, with Anna Friel as Jean, Imogen Poots as Debbie, Tamsin Egerton as Fiona, Chris Addison as Tony Power and James Lance as Carl Snitcher. It runs 105 minutes and was produced in the United Kingdom by Lipsync Productions, Film4 Productions, Revolution Films and Baby Cow Productions.

The Look of Love drew moderate audience scores, with a TMDB rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 131 votes. Critics were similarly reserved, giving it 5.9 out of 10 across 72 reviews, a slightly warmer response than that of viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The working title of the film – “King of Soho” – had to be changed after threats of legal action from Paul Raymond's son, Howard, who is himself working on a similarly titled project about his father's life.
