The Parker family lives apart from their small-town neighbours, keeping to themselves and holding fast to customs handed down over generations. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank rules with an iron will, and the family's private rituals carry a secret that would horrify anyone who learned of it. When the mother dies suddenly, her daughters Iris and Rose are expected to take on responsibilities she once bore, duties that go well beyond ordinary household tasks and that keep the family fed in a way the local supermarket cannot provide. As relentless rain swells the rivers, evidence surfaces near town, and residents begin to connect the disappearances in the area to the family that has always kept its distance.
Jim Mickle directed and co-wrote the film with Nick Damici, following his 2010 feature Stake Land; Cold in July came next in 2014 and In the Shadow of the Moon in 2019. Bill Sage plays Frank, with Ambyr Childers and Julia Garner as the sisters, and Michael Parks, Wyatt Russell and Kelly McGillis among the supporting cast. The production, a United States and French co-production, runs 105 minutes.
On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 5.8 from 602 votes, while on a critics' score it sits at 7 out of 10 from 90 reviews, a gap that suggests reviewers responded to it more warmly than general viewers did.
