Canada, summer 1898. A group of German settlers sets out from Ashcroft, the last railway station, heading north toward the newly discovered goldfields around Dawson. Led by the businessman Wilhelm Laser, the seven travellers cross roughly 2,500 kilometres of wilderness with covered wagons and packhorses. Among them are Emily Meyer, a journalist named Gustav Müller, and Carl Böhmer, whose reasons for making the journey are not immediately clear. Cold, exhaustion and uncertainty wear the group down, and tensions among them build as the land grows harsher.
Thomas Arslan wrote and directed the film, which followed his 1999 feature Dealer and came well before Scorched Earth in 2024. Nina Hoss plays Emily Meyer, with Lars Rudolph, Uwe Bohm, Marko Mandić, Peter Kurth and Wolfgang Packhäuser among the cast. The production was a German-Canadian collaboration between Schramm Film and Red Cedar Films.
Gold was released on 9 February 2013 and runs 112 minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 62 votes, a modest figure that reflects a limited viewership.
