Albert Markovski, an environmental activist troubled by a string of coincidences he cannot explain, hires a husband-and-wife pair who call themselves existential detectives. Bernard and Vivian Jaffe follow their clients, observe their daily routines and question the people around them in order to uncover the deeper meaning of their lives. Their investigation draws in Albert's conflict with Brad Stand, an ambitious young executive at the Huckabees retail chain, and eventually Brad's girlfriend Dawn. When Brad hires the same detectives, Albert loses confidence in the process and turns elsewhere for answers, while the Jaffes come to see that nearly everyone in Albert's orbit carries private worries of their own.
David O. Russell directed and co-wrote the film with Jeff Baena, working from a story about philosophy, coincidence and consumer culture. It followed Three Kings in Russell's filmography and arrived before The Fighter. Jason Schwartzman plays Albert, with Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin as the Jaffes, Jude Law as Brad, Isabelle Huppert as a French philosopher and Mark Wahlberg as a firefighter Albert meets. The production, backed by Fox Searchlight Pictures with Scott Rudin among the producers, cost about 22 million dollars and took roughly 20 million worldwide.
Ratings sit in mixed territory: 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb, 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB, and 6.4 out of 10 from 193 critics' reviews. The film runs 106 minutes and blends comedy with romance.
