Speed 2: Cruise Control
Short description
Annie, hoping for a quieter life after the events of the first film, has a new boyfriend, Alex. She believes he is an ordinary beach patrol officer, but she soon discovers he actually works for a police special unit and has a reputation for taking dangerous risks. To make amends, Alex takes her on a Caribbean cruise aboard a luxury ocean liner. Their vacation is disrupted when a disgruntled former employee of the ship's company seizes control of the vessel. With the liner locked on a fixed course and communications cut off, Alex and Annie must try to stop him before the ship endangers its passengers and causes an environmental catastrophe.
The film is the third feature directed by Jan de Bont, following Speed and Twister, and it is a sequel to Speed, with Sandra Bullock returning as Annie. Jason Patric plays Alex, and Willem Dafoe plays the hijacker, Geiger. The screenplay is by Jeff Nathanson and Randall McCormick, and de Bont produced with Steve Perry and Michael Peyser. The credited cast runs to 58 names and the crew to 189.
Released in June 1997, the film had a budget of 160 million USD and returned 165 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 3.9/10 from 84,845 votes, and on TMDB 4.6/10 from 1,871 votes. A critics' rating of 3.6/10 from 76 reviews places it below even the audience scores.
