Short description
Observe and Report centers on Ronnie Barnhardt, the head of security at the Forest Ridge shopping mall, who takes his job far more seriously than anyone around him thinks it deserves. He dreams of trading his flashlight for a badge and joining the police force, and his ambitions extend to Brandi, a cosmetics counter employee who pays him little attention. When an exhibitionist begins exposing himself to shoppers, Ronnie sees a chance to prove himself. His failure to catch the offender leads mall management to bring in Detective Harrison, a confident police officer whose involvement Ronnie resents and turns into a personal rivalry.
Jody Hill wrote and directed the film, which followed his earlier features. Seth Rogen leads the cast as Ronnie, with Ray Liotta as Harrison, Anna Faris as Brandi, Michael Peña as Dennis, Dan Bakkedahl as Mark and Jesse Plemons as Charles. The production, backed by Legendary Pictures and De Line Pictures, cost about 18 million dollars and took in roughly 24 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6, while on TMDB it stands at 5.4; a critics' score of 5.9 from 208 reviews sits slightly above the audience figures. The film runs 86 minutes and mixes comedy with crime and drama.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film's original title, “Observe and Report,” is a reference to the real motto of the American police: “Serve and Protect.”
- The role of Detective Harrison was originally intended for Danny McBride, but the actor had to decline due to commitments to other projects, and it went to Ray Liotta.
- Director Jody Hill's main source of inspiration while working on the film was his desire to make a comedic version of Martin Scorsese's thriller “Taxi Driver” (1976). Throughout the film, one can find numerous subtle references to this cult classic.
- Warner Bros. studio was very concerned that the film's black humor and dark tones would not be successful with audiences and demanded that its creators make a lighter and softer alternative version of the film. However, during test screenings, the original version performed better, and the studio decided to release it.
- Participating in the filming of the project convinced Seth Rogen that he needed to lose some weight, as he found it difficult to breathe the dry, thin air of New Mexico.
- The majority of filming took place at the now largely abandoned Winrock Shopping Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from April to June 2008.
