The Dark
Short description
Adelle travels from New York to a remote farmhouse on the Welsh coast with her young daughter, Sarah, hoping to rebuild her family with her estranged husband, James. Shortly after they arrive, Sarah is lost in the sea. As James leads the search for the child, Adelle is haunted by visions and by the sense that Sarah is somehow still present. A strange girl named Ebrill then appears, claiming knowledge of what happened to Sarah and pointing Adelle toward an old local legend about the dead returning when a living person is sacrificed.
The film is a horror mystery directed by John Fawcett, following Ginger Snaps and Lucky Girl in his filmography, from a screenplay by Stephen Massicotte. Maria Bello plays Adelle, Sean Bean plays James, Abigail Stone plays Ebrill and Sophie Stuckey plays Sarah. It was produced by Jeremy Bolt and Paul W. S. Anderson for Constantin Film, Impact Pictures, the UK Film Council and Isle of Man Film. Released in 2005, it runs 87 minutes and took about 7 million dollars worldwide, a modest return.
On IMDb it holds a 4.7 rating from ten critics' reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from 299 votes, a narrow gap between critical and audience response.
