In Secret

In Secret is a period crime drama adapted from Émile Zola's novel Thérèse Raquin. Set in nineteenth-century Paris, it centres on Thérèse, a young woman raised by her controlling aunt, Madame Raquin, and married off to her cousin Camille, a sickly man she does not love. Her life is divided between serving customers in the family shop and enduring evenings at home while her aunt plays dominoes with a regular group of visitors. When Camille brings home a friend named Laurent, Thérèse begins a secret affair with him, and the relationship sets off a chain of tragic events.

The film was directed by Charlie Stratton, who also wrote the screenplay, and produced by William Horberg, Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon. It was made in Hungary, the United States and Serbia. Elizabeth Olsen plays Thérèse, with Tom Felton as Camille, Jessica Lange as Madame Raquin and Oscar Isaac as Laurent. Matt Lucas and Shirley Henderson appear in supporting roles.

Released in 2014, In Secret runs 101 minutes and was Stratton's first feature as director. It drew a critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 86 reviews, while audiences gave it 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 11,000 votes and 6.1 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 261 votes, so viewers responded somewhat more favourably than critics did.
