A Case of You
Short description
Sam Newman, a young writer in New York, is taken with Birdie, the barista at his local coffee shop. His ordinary attempts to win her over go nowhere, so he turns to the internet, building an online profile filled out with everything that would make him her ideal match. The plan works better than he expected, and Birdie falls for the embellished version of him, leaving Sam to live up to the persona he invented or risk losing her.
A Case of You is a romantic comedy directed by Kat Coiro, her first feature, followed years later by Marry Me and You, Me & Tuscany. Justin Long stars as Sam and shares writing credit with Keir O'Donnell and Christian Long; Long and O'Donnell also produced alongside Holly Wiersma. Evan Rachel Wood plays Birdie, with Keir O'Donnell, Busy Philipps, Sienna Miller and Mizuo Peck in supporting roles. The film runs 91 minutes.
Released in 2013, the film drew modest responses: it holds a 5.6 rating on IMDb across roughly 13,000 votes and a 5.5 on TMDB from a few hundred votes, while a critics' score of 4.8 from 19 reviews sits below both audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to director Cat Coiro, she wanted to film this movie even before reading the script because it was titled after her favorite Joni Mitchell song, “A Case of You” (1971). Unfortunately, the authors did not obtain the rights to use this song in the film.
