Miss Austen Regrets is a British-American television drama about the novelist Jane Austen in the later part of her life. Approaching forty and unmarried, she lives with her mother and sister in modest circumstances in Hampshire, where her mother sometimes faults her for having failed to marry well. When her niece Fanny asks for help in judging a suitor, Jane, regarded by the family as an authority on love, takes on the role of adviser. The task turns her thoughts back on her own romantic history and the choices she made, including a proposal she declined and a younger doctor she once met.
Jeremy Lovering directed the film from a screenplay by Gwyneth Hughes, with Anne Pivcevic and Jamie Laurenson producing for the BBC and WGBH. Olivia Williams plays Jane Austen, Greta Scacchi appears as her sister Cassandra, and Imogen Poots plays Fanny. Phyllida Law, Pip Torrens and Tom Hiddleston round out the cast as Mrs. Austen, Edward Austen-Knight and John Plumptre respectively. The film runs ninety minutes and was released in February 2008.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from sixty-seven votes, a modest figure reflecting a small but mixed response.
