The Proposal

Margaret Tate is a demanding New York book editor whose Canadian citizenship becomes a problem when her visa status is threatened and deportation looms. Rather than lose the life she has built, she coerces her long-suffering assistant, Andrew Paxton, into posing as her fiancé so she can remain in the country. Andrew agrees, but on his own terms, and the arrangement draws the attention of an immigration official. A trip to Alaska to meet his family, who have their own ideas about the wedding, forces the two city professionals to keep up the act far from home.

Anne Fletcher directed the film, her third feature after Step Up and 27 Dresses, from a screenplay by Pete Chiarelli. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds lead the cast as Margaret and Andrew, with Malin Åkerman, Craig T. Nelson, Mary Steenburgen and Betty White in supporting roles. Produced by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman for Touchstone Pictures and Mandeville Films, it runs 108 minutes.

Made for around 40 million dollars, the film took in roughly 317 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from about 394,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.2 from far fewer votes. A critics' score of 5.5 from 191 reviews places it below the audience ratings.
