Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani follows Naina, a studious young woman who abandons her textbooks to join an old school friend on a trek through the Himalayas. There she grows closer to Bunny, a charming former classmate whose appetite for travel and adventure keeps him from wanting any kind of commitment. She never tells him how she feels, and the two go their separate ways. Nearly a decade later they meet again at a friend's wedding, now in their late twenties, each having realised some ambitions and set others aside. The question is whether two people who picture their lives so differently can be together.
The film was directed by Ayan Mukerji, who also wrote the screenplay, and produced by Karan Johar and Hiroo Johar for Dharma Productions with UTV Motion Pictures and Eros International. Ranbir Kapoor plays Bunny and Deepika Padukone plays Naina, with Aditya Roy Kapur, Kalki Koechlin, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Farooq Shaikh in supporting roles. It runs 160 minutes.
Released in May 2013, it was the first of the three features Mukerji has directed to date. Made on a budget of about 8 million dollars, it took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from around 57,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3 out of 10 from about 314 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 6.1 out of 10 from 10 reviews.
