The Hangover
Short description
The Hangover follows three friends who wake up in a Las Vegas hotel suite after a bachelor party with no memory of the night before. The room is a wreck, a baby has turned up in a closet and a tiger is in the bathroom, but the worst problem is that the groom, Doug, is nowhere to be found. With the wedding only hours away, Phil, Stu and Doug's future brother-in-law Alan have to piece together what happened while still badly hungover, retracing their own bad decisions in the hope of getting Doug to the church in time.
Todd Phillips directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. It was his sixth feature, arriving between School for Scoundrels and Due Date, and it launched a trilogy that continued with The Hangover Part II and The Hangover Part III. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis star as the three friends, with Justin Bartha as Doug and Heather Graham and Sasha Barrese among the supporting cast. Roughly seventy cast members and just over a hundred crew are credited.
Made for about 35 million dollars, the comedy took in some 467 million dollars worldwide, a return that made it one of the most commercially successful releases of its year. Audiences have kept it in circulation: on IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 across more than 920,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 7.3 from around 18,500 ratings. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 237 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores but broadly in line with them.
What's left behind the scenes
- Stu's missing tooth required no special effects or prosthetics. Actor Ed Helms never had a permanent incisor, and his denture was removed in the scenes where it was necessary.
- The original title of the film translates as "Hangover".
- The film contains numerous analogies to the film "Rain Man" (1988).
- When the whole group drives to Vegas in a convertible, Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis) stands up and shouts “Road Trip!”. Todd Phillips directed a film of the same name (2000).
- During filming in Las Vegas, one of the Mercedes cars, very worn and standing out because of it, was stolen from the vehicle parking area. The next day, filming of one of the road scenes took place on the city streets, and traffic was blocked by the local police. One of the crew members noticed a very similar car in the resulting traffic jam and informed the police; the driver was detained and arrested, and the stolen car was returned.
- Three pairs of twins and a doll were used as the baby.
- In commentary on the DVD, Todd Phillips states that the possible appearance of the chicken in the room is likely due to the guys intending to feed it to the tiger.
- Plans for a sequel were announced by the studio even before the film's release.
- Director Todd Phillips waived his usual fee in exchange for a share of the film's rights. The decision proved incredibly successful and earned him a huge sum as part of the profits received.
