Macross Plus: The Movie

Set on the colony planet Eden around the year 2040, three decades after the war between humanity and the Zentradi, the film follows a competition between two transforming fighter aircraft built by rival manufacturers. The U.N. government intends to pick a successor to its current variable fighter, and the unruly pilot Isamu Alva Dyson is assigned to test one of the competing designs. The other is flown by Guld Goa Bowman, a Zentradi of mixed heritage and a childhood friend of Isamu from whom he has long been estranged. The arrival of Myung Fang Lone, a producer preparing the debut concert of the virtual idol Sharon Apple and a former friend of both men, sharpens their old rivalry and disrupts the trials.

Shoji Kawamori and Shinichiro Watanabe directed the film, which Kawamori made after Macross: Do You Remember Love? and before Genesis of Aquarion: Wings of Genesis, and which was Watanabe's first feature ahead of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. Keiko Nobumoto wrote the screenplay. The voice cast includes Takumi Yamazaki as Isamu, Unsho Ishizuka as Guld, Rica Fukami as Myung, Mako Hyodo as Sharon Apple, Kenji Utsumi as Col. Millard Johnson and Megumi Hayashibara as Lucy MacMillan.

Released in Japan in 1995, the film runs 115 minutes and was produced by Bandai Visual, Studio Boston, Triangle Staff and Studio Nue. It holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb and 7 out of 10 on TMDB, indicating a generally favourable response from viewers on both platforms.
