Short description
Star Trek Beyond continues the voyages of the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk. Some two years into its five-year mission, the crew is ambushed by a powerful and unknown force. The ship is destroyed, and the survivors find themselves stranded on an uncharted planet, cut off from the Federation and scattered across hostile terrain. There they face a ruthless enemy, and Kirk and his officers must find a way to regroup and survive while confronting what the attack means for the ideals they serve.
The film was directed by Justin Lin, his sixth feature following five entries in the Fast & Furious series, and written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, Pegg and John Cho reprise their roles from the earlier Kelvin-timeline films, among a credited cast of 59. It was produced by J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Bryan Burk for Paramount, Skydance, Bad Robot and Perfect Storm Entertainment.
Made for about 185 million US dollars, the film took roughly 343 million dollars worldwide, a return that fell short of its production cost. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 269,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from over 7,000. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 319 reviews places it in line with, rather than above, the audience scores.

- Justin Lin's directorial debut in the science fiction genre.
- In August 2014, Paramount Pictures officially announced the postponement of the film’s release date. The new date coincided with the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s (1921-1991) creation of Star Trek (1966-1969).
- In early interviews, the screenwriter Simon Pegg referred to the space station as "Starbase Yorktown." In the initial drafts of "Star Trek" (1966-1969) scripts, written by Gene Roddenberry, "Yorktown" was the name of the starship. Roddenberry later renamed it "Enterprise."
- John Cho revealed that his character Hikaru Sulu is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. This decision was made by screenwriter Simon Pegg as a sign of respect for George Takei, who played Sulu in the original series and is gay.
- The film is dedicated to the memory of Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin.
- The trailer for theatrical release was released on May 20, 2016.

- Karl Urban admitted in an interview that he almost turned down the offer to reprise his role as Dr. Leonard McCoy. He was persuaded to accept the offer by director Justin Lin.
