Short description

Set in the distant future, this science fiction animation follows Captain Harlock and his crew aboard the ship Arcadia. Earth is controlled by the oppressive Gaia Coalition, while a massive force of exiled humans seeks to reclaim the planet as their home. Caught between these opposing powers, Harlock acts as a rogue element who follows his own moral code to fight for the planet. The conflict is further complicated by Logan, an operative for Gaia who infiltrates the crew with orders to kill the captain but eventually finds himself drawn to Harlock's ideals.

Directed by Shinji Aramaki, this project is the sixth film in his career, following Starship Troopers: Invasion. The production was a collaboration between Toei Animation and Marza Animation Planet. The voice cast features Shun Oguri as Harlock, alongside Haruma Miura, Yu Aoi, Arata Furuta, Ayano Fukuda, and Toshiyuki Morikawa.

The film had a budget of 30 million USD and earned 18 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is similar across different platforms, with a rating of 6.4 on IMDb based on 13,000 votes and a rating of 6.6 on TMDB from 1,115 votes.

  • The basis for the animated film is the cult comic books “Space Pirate Captain Harlock,” which were published in the magazine “Play Comic” (1977-1979).
  • The Japanese version has a runtime of 115 minutes.
  • The “Space Pirate Harlock” comic franchise has fan clubs worldwide and is among the five most popular comics of all time, alongside “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.”
  • "Space Pirate Harlock 3D" is the most technically complex and refined animated version of the legendary hero’s adventures. For example, motion capture technology was used in creating the characters.
  • The film received an award from the US-based International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society as the best animated project internationally.
  • The international distribution version was prepared with the participation of the United States and France.
  • In previous stories about Harlock, Totiro Oyama was in love with the queen of space pirates – Emeraldas. In this story, Oyama is in love with the alien Mime.
  • After watching the film, director James Cameron commented: “Large-scale, grandiose, and visually unprecedented. ‘Harlock’ is ahead of its time, astonishing the imagination.”
