Fearless Hyena

Set in China during the Qing dynasty, Fearless Hyena follows Shing Lung, a young man who has spent years learning his grandfather's secret style of kung fu. His grandfather, a former rebel fighter, has warned him to keep the art hidden and avoid drawing attention, but Lung is cocky and quick to brawl, and he keeps getting into street fights. When a ruthless general named Yen Chuen Wong recognizes the grandfather's fighting style during one of these brawls, he traces it back to the old man and has him killed. Blaming himself for leading the killers there, Lung trains under an eccentric old master who teaches him an unusual "emotional" form of kung fu, built on confusing an opponent with unpredictable feelings and reactions, so that he can take his revenge.

The film is Jackie Chan's directorial debut, the first of the fourteen features he has directed, and he also co-wrote the screenplay with Lo Wei. The cast includes James Tien Chuen, Yen Shi-Kwan, Dean Shek, and Kun Li, with twenty-three credited performers in all. It is a Hong Kong and Korean co-production running 97 minutes, and it blends action with comedy. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from 234 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.7 from 183 votes, a gap that suggests viewers there respond to it more warmly than IMDb users do.
