In a near future where game designers are treated as stars, Allegra Geller has created eXistenZ, a virtual reality game played through an organic console called a game pod, which connects directly to the player's nervous system through a spinal port. At a presentation of the game, an attacker tries to kill her, and she escapes with Ted Pikul, a young marketing trainee. To find out whether her creation has been damaged, she persuades him to enter the game with her, and the chase continues across a world where the line between the game and reality becomes impossible to draw.

David Cronenberg directed and wrote the film, producing it with András Hámori and Robert Lantos. It was his thirteenth feature in chronological order, following Crash and preceding Spider. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Allegra, with Jude Law as Ted, and Ian Holm, Willem Dafoe, Don McKellar and Callum Keith Rennie among the supporting cast.

Made for about 15 million US dollars, the film took roughly 3 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 113,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.8, from a much smaller base of about 2,300 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 75 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
