The Grudge 3
Short description
After the curse has claimed its victims in Japan and killed the last survivor of an earlier outbreak in Chicago, it follows his remains back to the city. There, a young Japanese woman, Naoko, arrives at a run-down apartment building, knowing what the residents are facing. The tenants include two sisters and their psychologically troubled brother, who are renovating the building, and a small girl who senses that something is wrong before the adults do. As the curse reaches the household, Naoko holds what may be the only way to stop it, though her plan carries its own risks.
The Grudge 3 is a 2009 American horror, mystery and thriller film, the second feature directed by Toby Wilkins after Splinter (2008). Brad Keene wrote the screenplay, and Takashige Ichise and Andrew Pfeffer produced for Stage 6 Films, Mandate International, Ghost House Pictures and Ozla Pictures. Johanna Braddy plays Lisa Morrison, alongside Emi Ikehata as Naoko Kawamata, Jadie-Rose Hobson, Gil McKinney, Beau Mirchoff and Shawnee Smith as Dr. Sullivan. Made for about 5 million dollars and taking roughly 39 million worldwide, it was a commercial success relative to its cost. Audiences were less enthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 4.6 from around 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 from 679.
What's left behind the scenes
- By the time work on the film finally began, Oga Tanaka had noticeably outgrown the character of Toshio, and he had to be replaced by actor Simba Tsutsumi.
- The first film in the franchise not directed by Takashi Shimizu. He served as a producer in this case.
- The majority of the film was shot in Bulgaria, although it is set in Chicago and partially in Tokyo.
- The cast was not allowed to see Aiko Horiiuti in her ghost makeup, so the actors’ reactions in the attack scenes are genuine. In particular, Marina Shirgis and Joanna E. Brady recount that they were genuinely frightened when they first filmed scenes with Horiiuti as Kayako.
- Takako Fuji refused to play Kayako because she was tired of playing the same character for almost 10 years. She was replaced by Aiko Horiiuti, for whom this was her first film role with her full name credited.
- Matthew Knight is the only actor who reprised his role from the previous film. No other characters from the second film appear on screen – with the exception of ghosts, who are also voiced by different actors.
