Short description
Tom Hansen works at a Los Angeles greeting-card company, writing the cheerful captions printed inside the cards, though his real ambition is architecture. When Summer Finn arrives as his boss's new assistant, Tom is immediately drawn to her and becomes convinced she is the woman he is meant to spend his life with. Summer, however, does not believe in love and has no interest in a serious relationship, a difference the two cannot overcome. They grow close despite it, and when she ends things, Tom looks back over the roughly 500 days they spent together, sorting through the moments that defined the relationship as he tries to understand why it fell apart and what he wants for himself.
The film was directed by Marc Webb, his first feature, and written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel lead the cast as Tom and Summer, with Geoffrey Arend, Chloë Grace Moretz, Matthew Gray Gubler and Clark Gregg in supporting roles. Produced for about 8 million dollars, it took roughly 61 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from about 614,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3 out of 10 from over 11,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 230 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.

- At the beginning of the film, a certain Jenny Beckman is mentioned. This is a real woman with whom one of the screenwriters – Scott Neustadter – broke up some time ago (in reality, she simply left him). She served as the prototype for Summer, played by Zooey Deschanel, and the film's script is based on the story of their relationship with Neustadter.
- The film studio's management did not intend to include a documentary about love in the film and even ordered director Marc Webb not to shoot it. They were only persuaded otherwise by the audience's reaction during the film's first screening.
- The chess game scene from the film that Tom watches in the cinema on day 314 is a reference to Ingmar Bergman's 'The Seventh Seal' (1957).
- The film that Tom and Summer watch in the cinema is 'The Graduate' (1967), starring Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross. The narrator also mentions this film at the beginning when describing Tom.
- The scene where Tom and Summer are sitting at a table, which Tom watches in the cinema on day 314, is a reference to Ingmar Bergman's 'Persona' (1966).
