World's Greatest Dad
Short description
Lance Clayton is a high school poetry teacher who once hoped to become a famous and wealthy writer, but his career never took off. He is involved with Claire, the school's art teacher, who keeps their relationship quiet and avoids commitment, while his teenage son Kyle is difficult and treats him with contempt. After a bizarre accident brings tragedy into Lance's life, he finds himself with an unexpected route to the fame and fortune he always wanted, provided he can live with how he got there.
Bobcat Goldthwait wrote and directed the film, his second turn behind the camera after 2009. Robin Williams leads the cast as Lance, with Alexie Gilmore as Claire and Daryl Sabara as Kyle. Richard Kelly, Sean McKittrick and Howard Gertler produced the comedy drama, which runs 99 minutes and was made for about 10 million dollars.
The film drew modest but steady attention. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 across roughly 42,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from around 676 votes, a smaller sample that points to a narrower international following. A critics' rating of 6.9 from 117 reviews places professional opinion broadly in line with the audience response rather than sharply apart from it.
What's left behind the scenes
- Robin Williams (1951-2014) agreed to play the lead role after reading the script, although he had initially planned to appear only in a cameo role out of friendship with screenwriter and director Bobcat Goldthwait. Williams and Goldthwait had been friends since their days as stand-up comedians.
- Doctor Pentola distributes copies of Kyle's book "You Don't Know Me," and a couple of pages are briefly shown in the frame. In fact, the viewer sees two pages from Franz Kafka's novella "The Metamorphosis" (1912).
