Vampire Academy

Rose Hathaway is a seventeen-year-old dhampir, half human and half vampire, training to become a guardian of the Moroi, a peaceful race of mortal vampires. Her closest friend is Lissa Dragomir, a Moroi princess whose royal blood makes her a target. After the two flee their school, they are caught and brought back to St. Vladimir's Academy in Montana, where Rose falls under the stern supervision of her mentor, Dimitri Belikov, and grows drawn to him. Inside the school, ambitious figures seek to use Lissa for their own ends, while outside its walls the Strigoi, immortal and predatory vampires, hunt her kind.

The film is directed by Mark Waters, working from a screenplay by Daniel Waters. It is the eighth of the fifteen features Mark Waters has directed, following Mr. Popper's Penguins and preceding Salem Rogers. Zoey Deutch plays Rose, with Lucy Fry as Lissa, Danila Kozlovsky as Dimitri, Gabriel Byrne as Victor Dashkov, Dominic Sherwood as Christian Ozera and Olga Kurylenko as Headmistress Kirova. It is based on the first novel in Richelle Mead's series of the same name.

Made for a budget of around 30 million US dollars, the film took in roughly half that amount worldwide, a weak return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from about 59,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from a much smaller base of around 1,800 votes. A critics' rating of 3.6 from 57 reviews places it well below the audience scores.
