Thunder in Paradise
Short description
R. J. Spencer is a former Navy SEAL struggling financially to maintain his business and his high-speed boat, Thunder. To protect his assets, he enters a marriage of convenience with Megan Whitaker. When Megan is kidnapped, Spencer and his partner Bru must rescue her to avoid losing everything. The story blends action and adventure with elements of comedy and treasure hunting.
Directed by Douglas Schwartz, this 1993 American production features Hulk Hogan in the lead role as Spencer. The supporting cast includes Chris Lemmon as Bru, Carol Alt as Kelly LaRew, and Felicity Waterman as Megan Whitaker. The film was produced by Trimark Pictures, Reteitalia, and Berk/Schwartz/Bonann Productions, with a screenplay written by Michael Berk.
Audience reception for the film has been mixed. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 4.5/10 based on 1,600 votes, while on TMDB, it has a higher rating of 5.8/10 from 34 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Hulk Hogan, who played the main role, he had an accident while riding a jet ski just before filming began. However, other wrestlers claimed that Hogan was punched in the face backstage at WrestleMania IX (a professional wrestling show that took place on April 4, 1993, in a suburb of Las Vegas). As a result, Hogan wore an eye patch for almost the entire film, and the script was revised to include a scene where Spencer, played by Hogan, is struck in the face by a character played by Jim Neidhart.
- The film served as a pilot for a two-part television series of the same name.
- At the beginning of the film, the characters played by Hulk Hogan and Chris Lemmon rescue a Cuban with his son from terrorists. This part of the film, with some additional material not present in the pilot project, was repeated in an episode of the television series titled “An Eye for an Eye”.
- Andre the Giant (born Andre Rene Roussimoff, a professional French wrestler and actor of Bulgarian-Polish descent) was considered for one of the roles, but he died at the age of 46 just a few months before filming began.
