Lucy Moderatz works at a Chicago transit station and quietly admires a well-dressed commuter named Peter Callaghan from behind her booth. When he is mugged and falls onto the tracks, she pulls him to safety, and he ends up in a coma. At the hospital, Peter's family mistakes Lucy for his fiancée, and she goes along with it, welcomed warmly by relatives who believe she belongs with them. Peter's brother Jack is the one who doubts her story, and the attraction that grows between Lucy and Jack complicates the false engagement she has let stand.
Jon Turteltaub directed the film, his third feature after 3 Ninjas and Cool Runnings. Daniel G. Sullivan and Fredric LeBow wrote the screenplay, and Roger Birnbaum and Joe Roth produced it for Caravan Pictures and Hollywood Pictures. Sandra Bullock plays Lucy, with Bill Pullman as Jack, Peter Gallagher as Peter, and Peter Boyle, Jack Warden and Glynis Johns among the supporting cast.
Released in April 1995, the film cost about 17 million dollars and returned roughly 182 million worldwide, a strong multiple of its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from about 126,000 votes, and on TMDB it has 7 from around 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 62 reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than far above or below them.
