Three boys survive by picking through a vast garbage dump on the edge of a Brazilian city. Their routine is broken when one of them finds a wallet among the refuse. The discovery draws immediate attention from the police, whose eagerness to recover the wallet makes the boys suspect it holds something significant. Rather than hand it over, Raphael, Gardo and Rato decide to keep it and investigate what they have stumbled onto, a choice that puts them in the path of corrupt officials and powerful interests determined to bury the matter. A local priest and his colleague become the few adults willing to stand with them.

Stephen Daldry directed the film, which sits between Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and Together in his filmography. Richard Curtis wrote the screenplay, and the producers were Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Kris Thykier. Newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luís and Gabriel Weinstein play the three boys, while Wagner Moura, Selton Mello and Rooney Mara appear in supporting roles. The production was a German, Brazilian and British co-production.
