Shattered
Short description
Dan Merrick walks away from a car crash with his memory gone. His face has been rebuilt by surgery, but he retains almost nothing of his past, including his marriage to Judith, who tries to help him rebuild his life. Fragments surface that he cannot place, and the people around him seem to know more about him than he does. Suspecting that something is being kept from him, he hires Gus Klein, a pet shop owner who also works as a private investigator and who claims to have done work for Merrick before the accident.
Wolfgang Petersen directed and wrote the screenplay, with John Davis and David Korda among the producers. Tom Berenger plays Merrick, Bob Hoskins plays Klein, and Greta Scacchi plays Judith, with Joanne Whalley, Corbin Bernsen and Debi A. Monahan in supporting roles. The film followed Petersen's The NeverEnding Story and Enemy Mine; after it came In the Line of Fire, Outbreak and Air Force One. It was made for about 22 million dollars and took in roughly 12 million worldwide, a modest return.
On IMDb, audience reception sits at 6.2 out of 10 from 238 votes, while the critics' rating stands lower, at 5.1 out of 10 from 15 reviews, suggesting that viewers responded to the thriller more warmly than reviewers did. It runs 98 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- A tape of this film appears in "The Ring" (2002), and is particularly noticeable in the cabin scene.
- Plastic surgeon George Herbert Semel, who acted as a consultant on the film's set, also played a role – the role of a plastic surgeon.
- Nicole Kidman auditioned for the lead female role.
- When Merrick examines the container, it continues to glow from within even after he removes the flashlight.
- At the end of the film, Gus is completely dry, despite being underwater just a few minutes earlier.
- During the chase in the forest, the hubcap flies off the car's front right wheel, but it's back on in the next shot.
- The initial car crash in the plot is said to have occurred in Marin County, California, but in the scene where they return to the crash site, you can see granite slopes and tall pine trees, which are uncharacteristic of the area.
- At the end of the film, when the car falls off the cliff, it's seen flipping over at the end of the fall. However, in the final helicopter shots, the car is burning but remains upright.
- Six cameras were used to film the Mercedes falling off the cliff (the car plummeted over 150 meters to the ground). They were operated by cameramen with climbing experience who were secured with safety ropes. The filming equipment was delivered to the shooting locations by helicopter.
