Short description

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa follows Irving Zisman, an 86-year-old man who suddenly becomes responsible for his eight-year-old grandson, Billy. With Billy's mother in prison, Irving has to drive the boy across the United States to his father. Along the way, the mismatched pair stage a series of hidden-camera pranks on ordinary people who have no idea they are part of a comedy, including visits to a child beauty pageant, a funeral and a biker bar.

The film was directed by Jeff Tremaine and written and produced by Tremaine, Spike Jonze and Johnny Knoxville. It is the sixth film Tremaine directed, following the Jackass features and their companion releases, and it arrived between Jackass 3.5 and Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa .5. Knoxville plays Irving, Jackson Nicoll plays Billy, and the cast also includes Georgina Cates, Catherine Keener and Spike Jonze. The production cost about 15 million dollars and returned roughly 152 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for a comedy of its scale.

It is a spin-off of the Jackass series, built around a scripted story that serves as a frame for pranks played on real, unsuspecting members of the public. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from around 100,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 out of 10. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 109 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores, so viewers have generally responded to it more warmly than reviewers did.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Johnny Knoxville stated that his character, Irving Zisman, is a combination of his own father and a more perverse version of himself.
  • Despite his young age, Jackson Nicoll remained in character for almost the entire duration of filming.
  • Although scenes with Spike Jonze did not make it into the final version of the film, his name is listed in the end credits, and deleted scenes featuring him can be seen on DVD and Blu-ray.
  • Old Man Irving's car is a Lincoln, but the steering wheel inside is from a Ford, which is clearly noticeable from certain camera angles.
  • In the diner where Irving and Billy had the farting contest, Billy first eats his breakfast, and after a shot change, he is already eating chicken parmesan.
  • When Billy is sitting with Lisa, she is wearing a coat. When Irving approaches, she is already without a coat.
  • In the defecation scene, the smear on the wall appears after the grandfather has relieved himself. And the woman sitting behind Billy is initially not present. She appears when the grandfather and Billy get up, preparing to leave.
  • This is the first “Freaks” film in which people not from the “Freaks” team participated in writing the script. Screenwriters Fax Bahr and Adam Small previously wrote a parody of “Freaks” for their show MADtv.
