A series of attacks targets the people closest to detective Kogoro Mouri. Inspector Megure is wounded while jogging, and others in Mouri's circle are struck soon after, each incident accompanied by a playing card and a strange object. The victims' names contain numbers that match card values, and the attacks follow the cards downward from king toward ace. Conan Edogawa works out the pattern while the police focus on a card dealer recently released from prison who holds a grudge against Mouri, the man who arrested him. At the same time, Ran Mouri is troubled by nightmares that seem to return her to events from about ten years earlier involving her parents, memories she cannot fully place. The question of who the final victim will be drives the investigation.
The film is the second entry in the Detective Conan theatrical series, released in Japan in 1998. Kenji Kodama directed, following the first film, The Time Bombed Skyscraper, with Kazunari Kouchi writing the screenplay and Michihiko Suwa producing. The voice cast includes Minami Takayama as Conan, Kappei Yamaguchi as Shinichi Kudo, Wakana Yamazaki as Ran, Akira Kamiya as Kogoro Mouri, Gara Takashima as Eri Kisaki and Chafurin as Inspector Megure, among 25 credited cast members and 78 credited crew.
The film took about 16 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7.3 rating from roughly 3,800 votes, and on TMDB a 7.2 from about 237 votes, indicating a generally favorable response across a modest but lasting audience.
