Noroi: The Curse

Noroi: The Curse follows Masafumi Kobayashi, a journalist who investigates reports of paranormal activity and turns his findings into television documentaries. Having gathered footage of incidents that appear to have nothing in common, he begins to sense a pattern behind them, one tied to the legend of an ancient demon. His completed documentary was never broadcast, and the film presents itself as that suppressed record, assembled from his tapes.

Koji Shiraishi directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Naoyuki Yokota, and the film was produced by Takashige Ichise. It was Shiraishi's first feature as director, according to the facts available, and he went on to make Ghost Zombie two years later. Jin Muraki plays Kobayashi, with Marika Matsumoto appearing as herself and Satoru Jitsunashi, Rio Kanno, Tomono Kuga and Shûta Kambayashi among the thirty-three credited cast members. The production had a budget of around two million dollars and was made in Japan by Xanadeux Company.

On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.9 from roughly fifteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it also sits at 6.9 from a much smaller pool of voters. The two sets of viewers land in the same place despite the difference in turnout. The film runs 115 minutes and mixes horror, mystery and thriller elements.
