Short description
Scott Pilgrim is a bassist in a garage band called Sex Bob-Omb who has no job and a habit of drifting through relationships. He meets Ramona Flowers, who arrives in his life on roller skates, and becomes determined to win her over. The complication is that her past is literally waiting for him: seven ex-boyfriends who have formed a league and intend to remove him as a suitor, each one a stranger and more dangerous figure than the last. To have any chance with Ramona, Scott must fight his way through all of them.
Edgar Wright directed and co-wrote the film with Michael Bacall, following his earlier work on Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and preceding The World's End, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho, The Sparks Brothers and The Running Man. Michael Cera plays Scott, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Alison Pill as Kim Pine and Mark Webber as Stephen Stills. The production drew on companies from the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan, and about a hundred and nine crew members were credited alongside forty-four cast members.
Made for roughly 73 million dollars, the film returned about 52 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from around 495,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 7.5 from a smaller base of 8,882 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 272 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was released simultaneously with the final volume of the comic book.
- Ramona’s enormous war hammer in her purse is a quote from the popular manga “Ranma ½”, one of the sources that Bryan Lee O’Malley drew upon when he was just starting to create comics.
- In some scenes, Scott wears a t-shirt with the inscription “Plumtree.” This was the name of a Canadian female indie-pop band, from whose song the comic book author Bryan Lee O’Malley borrowed the name of the main character. Although the band has not existed for more than 10 years, the song “Scott Pilgrim” is included on the film’s soundtrack.
- Universal Studios purchased the rights to the adaptation even before the second volume of the original comic book went on sale, which was released in 2005.
- Scott's sister is 18 years old, meaning she is 4 years younger than Scott. In reality, however, actress Anna Kendrick is 3 years older than Michael Cera.
- The filmmakers managed to convince the famous alternative artist Beck to record four tracks for Sex Bob-omb. Beck played all the musical parts, and the vocals were recorded by the actors.
