Short description

Victor Frankenstein follows the young medical student Victor Von Frankenstein and his assistant Igor, whose paths cross when Victor takes the troubled Igor under his care. The two form a close friendship built on a shared ambition to push scientific research past accepted limits, working toward experiments that would change how people understand life and death. As Victor's methods grow more radical and his obsession deepens, his work produces terrifying results, and only Igor is in a position to pull his friend back from what he has set in motion.

The film is a retelling of Mary Shelley's story told from Igor's point of view, and it traces both men from their early association toward the creature that becomes the familiar monster. Paul McGuigan directed from a screenplay by Max Landis, with John Davis producing. It is the seventh of the eight features McGuigan directed, arriving between Push and Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool. James McAvoy plays Victor and Daniel Radcliffe plays Igor, with Jessica Brown Findlay, Andrew Scott, Freddie Fox and Charles Dance among the supporting cast.

Made for a budget of 40 million US dollars, the film returned roughly 34 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from about 63,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6 out of 10, from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 138 reviews places professional assessment below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The story is narrated from the perspective of Igor, a character absent from Mary Shelley's original novel.
  • Shawn Levy was the initial choice for director, but he turned it down.
  • Filming took place from November 2013 to March 2014.
  • Four actors who appeared in the television series "Sherlock" (2010) starred in the film. These are Andrew Scott, Mark Gatiss, Lou Briley, and Alistair Petrie, who played, respectively, Moriarty, Mycroft Holmes, Molly Hooper, and Major James Sholto. In addition, the film's director Paul McGuigan directed four episodes of the television series "Sherlock".
  • In the mini-series "Children of Dune" (2003), James McAvoy played the son of the main character, whose role was played by Alec Newman. In the 2004 mini-series "Frankenstein," Alec Newman played Victor Frankenstein.
  • Kenneth Branagh, John Cleese, Robert Hardy, and Helena Bonham Carter starred in the previous full-length screen adaptation of this classic story ("Frankenstein," 1994). Along with Daniel Radcliffe, all of these actors appeared in films about the life and adventures of Harry Potter.
  • Dr. Clive is a new character in this latest film adaptation of the Frankenstein story. In the 1931 film "Frankenstein," Colin Clive played the main character.
  • The mispronunciation of the main character's name is an allusion to a character in the 1974 parody comedy "Young Frankenstein", who doesn't advertise his belonging to the infamous lineage and pronounces his surname "Frankensteen".
  • Daniel Radcliffe had to artificially add hair for the role of Igor.
  • The plot of the film reveals that Victor Frankenstein had a brother named Henry. The main character of the 1931 film "Frankenstein," played by Colin Clive, was not named Victor, but Henry Frankenstein.
