Short description

The residents of Bikini Bottom fall into chaos when a pirate named Burger Beard steals the secret formula for the Krabby Patty. SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs and Plankton set out to recover it, a mission that carries them from their underwater home into the human world, where they take on superhero forms. The film blends animation, both computer-generated and hand-drawn, with live-action sequences, and is a sequel to the 2004 SpongeBob feature and a continuation of the Nickelodeon series.

Mike Mitchell directed, working with Paul Tibbitt, from a screenplay by Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel. The voice cast returns Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Mr. Lawrence as Plankton and Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy, with Antonio Banderas as the pirate. The film sits between Mitchell's Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and Trolls in his directing credits.

Released in January 2015, the film runs 93 minutes and cost about 74 million dollars, going on to earn roughly 325 million dollars worldwide, a return that made it a substantial success. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 67,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from about 2,600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 102 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is dedicated to the memory of Ernest Borgnine.
  • Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash can be spotted in one of the film's trailers. However, he does not appear in the film itself.
