Short description
Blended follows two single parents, Lauren and Jim, who meet on a blind date that ends badly enough that both decide they never want to see each other again. Their paths cross once more when each separately buys a share of the same family vacation package, and they end up at a South African resort for a week with their children, sharing accommodations and taking part in organized family activities together.
Frank Coraci directed the film, working from a screenplay by Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera. It is the third of Coraci's collaborations with Adam Sandler as star, following The Waterboy and Click in the director's filmography. Sandler plays Jim and Drew Barrymore plays Lauren, their third on-screen pairing after The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates. The supporting cast includes Kevin Nealon, Terry Crews, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Bella Thorne, among 76 credited cast members and 262 credited crew.
Released in May 2014, the film had a budget of 40 million USD and went on to gross 128 million USD worldwide, a solid return relative to its cost. Audiences have been more favourable than critics: it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 157,000 votes and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from a smaller pool of voters, while the critics' rating stands at 4.1 out of 10 from 137 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Well-known South African cricketer and one of the best bowlers in the world, Dale Steyn, played a cameo role in this film.
- Pilanesberg National Park, as shown in the film, does not have lions due to the park's large size and the fact that it is not fenced.
- All the cars in 'New Jersey' have license plates from the state of Connecticut.
- When Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore meet in the store, the cashier is Ten-Second Tom from their previous joint film, Sandler and Barrymore’s “50 First Dates” (2004).
- Alexis Arquette played the cameo role of Georgina at the end of the film. She also played the role of George in “The Wedding Singer” (1997), which was Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore’s first joint film.
- The song “Over the Rainbow,” which Drew Barrymore sings as a lullaby, was written in 1939 specifically for the musical “The Wizard of Oz.”
