The White Storm follows three friends in the Hong Kong police narcotics unit: Tim, an ambitious chief inspector, his loyal subordinate Wai, and Chao, an officer working undercover. A mission in Thailand to capture a drug lord goes badly wrong, and the fallout divides the men. Five years later, a drug case brings them back into each other's lives under very different circumstances.
Benny Chan directed the film, which he also wrote with Manfred Wong Man-Chun and Ram Ling Chi-Man. It sits between Shaolin and Call of Heroes in his filmography, which also includes A Moment of Romance, Who Am I?, New Police Story and Rob-B-Hood. The leads are Lau Ching-wan, Louis Koo and Nick Cheung, with Yuan Quan, Ben Lam and Ken Lo among the credited cast of 22.
Released in late 2013, the film is a joint production from Hong Kong and mainland Chinese companies, shot partly in Thailand, and took about 41 million US dollars worldwide. Audience ratings are moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 3,100 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 115 votes, a small sample that suggests limited engagement there. The film runs 140 minutes.
