After their father dies in an accident, the four Dollanganger children and their mother Corrine are left with no money. Corrine takes them to the large estate of her wealthy parents, the Foxworths, from whom she has long been estranged. The children are hidden away in an upstairs room rather than welcomed into the family, and their religious grandmother Olivia treats them coldly. What was meant to be a short stay stretches on, and the siblings must rely on one another as their situation becomes harsher.
The film adapts V.C. Andrews's novel of the same name, previously brought to the screen in 1987, and was directed by Deborah Chow from a screenplay by Kayla Alpert. It stars Heather Graham as Corrine, with Kiernan Shipka and Mason Dye as the older siblings Cathy and Christopher, and Ava Telek and Maxwell Kovach as the twins Carrie and Cory. Dylan Bruce appears as Bart. It is a Canadian-American television production made for Lifetime, running 90 minutes.
Flowers in the Attic was released in January 2014, the first of several Andrews adaptations Lifetime produced. On TMDB it holds a 6.7 rating from 422 votes, a modest but solid audience response for a television film. It remains the title most closely associated with that run of adaptations.
