In Hong Kong, a gang led by Cao Nan robs an armored vehicle in broad daylight and kills bystanders as it escapes. Inspector Lui, a seasoned officer, struggles to stop the well-armed criminals through conventional police methods, and as a severe storm closes in on the city, he turns to a former inmate, To Sing Bong, in the hope that his ties to the gang will help bring them down.
Alan Yuen directed and wrote the film, the first of the two features he has directed, ahead of The Rookies. Andy Lau, who also served as a producer alongside Bill Kong Chi-Keung, plays Inspector Lui; Lam Ka-tung plays To Sing Bong, Hu Jun plays Cao Nan, and Yao Chen appears as Yan Bing, with Ray Lui and Philip Keung Ho-Man among a credited cast of thirty. The film is a Hong Kong and mainland Chinese co-production from Sil-Metropole Organisation, Edko Films and other partners, running 105 minutes.
Released in December 2013, Firestorm took in roughly 50 million US dollars worldwide. Audiences have been moderate in their assessment: on IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from about 3,200 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.1 out of 10 from 125 votes.
