Cold in July

In 1989, in a small East Texas town, Richard Dane wakes one night to find an intruder in his home. He shoots the man dead, and the killing is treated as a clear case of self-defence, with Richard briefly hailed as a local hero. His relief does not last. Russell, the dead man's father, arrives in town, an ex-convict apparently set on avenging his son, and Richard begins to fear for his wife and young child. As he tries to protect his family, Richard is drawn into something larger than a personal vendetta, and the story shifts into questions of corruption and concealed motives as he searches for what really lies behind the killing. Jim Bob, an unconventional local lawman, becomes his ally.

Cold in July was directed by Jim Mickle, who wrote the screenplay with Nick Damici. It was Mickle's third feature, following Stake Land and We Are What We Are. Michael C. Hall plays Richard, with Don Johnson as Jim Bob, Sam Shepard as Russell, Vinessa Shaw as Ann, and Damici and Wyatt Russell in supporting roles.

The film holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb from around 40,000 votes and a 6.5 on TMDB, while critics gave it 7 out of 10 across 114 reviews, so audiences and reviewers landed in similar territory. It is a drama and thriller running 109 minutes, a co-production between the United States and France.
