Kill the Messenger

Kill the Messenger follows Gary Webb, a reporter who uncovers a link between the CIA, Nicaraguan drug traffickers and the flow of cocaine into California, money that helped fund the Contra rebels. When his findings are published, he is initially praised, but the story soon turns against him. Government agencies and fellow journalists launch a campaign that damages his reputation, his career and his family life, and Webb finds himself fighting to defend both his work and himself.

The film was directed by Michael Cuesta, whose next feature was American Assassin. Peter Landesman wrote the screenplay, and Jeremy Renner produced and stars as Webb, heading a cast of 32 credited performers that includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Sheen, Ray Liotta, Robert Patrick and Andy García.

Released in 2014 and running 112 minutes, it is a crime drama based on real events, made for about 5 million dollars and taking in roughly the same amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 50,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.6 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 129 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
