Black Sea

Black Sea is an adventure thriller about Robinson, a submarine captain who loses his job at a salvage company and is left adrift. A go-between named Daniels offers him a way back into the water: take command of a hired vessel and search the depths of the Black Sea for a sunken submarine said to be carrying a cargo of gold. Robinson assembles a mixed crew of British and Russian sailors, and the expedition sets out for the wreck. Inside the cramped boat, greed and desperation take hold, and as the mission grows more uncertain the men begin to turn on one another.

Kevin Macdonald directed the film, working from a screenplay by Dennis Kelly. It is the seventh of thirteen features Macdonald has directed, following How I Live Now and preceding Whitney. Jude Law plays Robinson, with Karl Davies, Jodie Whittaker, Daniel Ryan, Scoot McNairy and Tobias Menzies among the cast; 24 performers and 120 crew members are credited.

The film was produced by Focus Features, Film4 Productions and Cowboy Films, with Macdonald and Charles Steel as producers. It was released in December 2014 and runs 115 minutes. Made for about 8 million dollars, it took in roughly 4 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 43,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from more than 1,200 votes, while a critics' rating of 6.6 from 138 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
