Ebola Syndrome is a 1996 Hong Kong–South African horror crime film about Kai, a restaurant worker who murders several people after being caught in a compromising situation with his employer's wife. He flees Hong Kong for South Africa, where he remains in hiding for years. After an encounter in which he is infected with the Ebola virus but does not fall ill, he becomes a carrier. He eventually returns to Hong Kong, where he spreads the disease to others without intending to stop.
The film was directed by Herman Yau, the second of the sixteen features he has directed in chronological order, following The Untold Story in 1993 and preceding All of a Sudden in 1996. Chau Ting wrote the screenplay, Wong Jing produced, and Anthony Wong plays Kai. The supporting cast includes Vincent Wan Yeung-Ming, Shing Fui-On, Lo Meng, Marianne Chan and Angel Wong Chui-Ling.
Released on 15 June 1996 and running 100 minutes, the film blends comedy, crime and horror across Hong Kong and South African settings. On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from around 5,500 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.4 from roughly 160 votes, indicating a modest but consistent level of audience appreciation for a cult genre title.
