Two boys displaced by the 1971 war that created Bangladesh make their way to Calcutta, where they survive on the streets and grow inseparable. As men, Bikram Bose and Bala Bhattacharya become the most feared figures in the city's underworld, building a criminal empire together. Their partnership is unsettled by Nandita Sengupta, a cabaret performer who draws the attention of both men, and by Satyajeet Sarkar, a police officer who sets out to bring them down.
Gunday was released in February 2014. It is an action crime drama running 152 minutes, produced by Aditya Chopra for Yash Raj Films and written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar; it was the first feature he directed, ahead of Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai, Bloody Daddy, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Boss 2. Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor play the two leads, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Nandita, Irrfan Khan as the policeman pursuing them, and Saurabh Shukla and Pankaj Tripathi in supporting roles. Around forty crew members are credited.
The film's reception was poor. On IMDb it holds 2.8 out of 10 across roughly 61,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.9 out of 10 from far fewer votes, a small sample that makes that figure less meaningful. Both point the same way: audiences largely rejected the film despite its established cast and production banner.
