Set in Belfast in 1971, as the Northern Ireland conflict slides toward civil war, the film follows Gary Hook, a young and inexperienced British soldier sent into a city split between loyalist Protestant and nationalist Catholic areas. Paramilitary units operate on both sides, and radical street gangs and undercover agents pursue their own agendas. During a patrol, Gary's unit is caught up in a violent confrontation with a hostile crowd and he is left behind. Stranded and alone in hostile territory, he must find his way back to base through a night of fear and uncertainty.
Yann Demange directed from a screenplay by Gregory Burke, with Jack O'Connell in the lead. The cast includes Sean Harris, Paul Anderson, Sam Reid, Sam Hazeldine and Barry Keoghan, and the film was produced by Robin Gutch and Angus Lamont for Film4, the BFI, Warp Films and Screen Yorkshire. It was Demange's first feature, followed by White Boy Rick in 2018.
Made for a budget of about 11 million USD, the film took roughly 3 million USD at the worldwide box office, a modest return relative to its cost. Reception among reviewers was stronger than among general viewers: critics rated it 7.8 out of 10 across 137 reviews, while on TMDB it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 1,250 votes.
