When a beautiful employee of a cosmetics company is found murdered, attention quickly turns to her missing colleague, Miki Shirono, a plain woman who worked at the same firm. Television director Yuji Akahoshi begins tracking down Miki's friends, family and acquaintances, interviewing them one by one as rumour and suspicion spread through the media. What emerges is less a clear picture of the truth than a patchwork of conflicting impressions of who Miki was and what happened.
The film is directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura, working from a screenplay by Tamio Hayashi. It stands between his 2009 film The Triumphant Return of General Rouge and The Inerasable, which followed in 2016. Mao Inoue plays the elusive Miki, with Go Ayano as the television director pursuing answers, and Misako Renbutsu, Nanao, Shihori Kanjiya and Erena Ono among the credited cast of twenty-four.
Released in Japan in March 2014, the film runs just over two hours and was made by Shueisha, Shochiku, East Japan Marketing and Communications, and GYAO. It took around nine million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from roughly two thousand two hundred votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.4 from a much smaller number of votes, suggesting a modest but broadly consistent response from viewers across both platforms.
