Brick Mansions
Short description
Brick Mansions is set in a dystopian Detroit where a walled-off neighbourhood known as Brick Mansions has been left to the criminals who control it. A drug lord named Tremaine holds power there, and when he obtains a weapon capable of threatening the whole city, an undercover police officer, Damien Collier, is sent in to reach him through his gang. Damien reluctantly teams up with Lino, a former convict from the area who knows its streets and has his own score to settle with Tremaine. Their interests overlap in a plan to stop the weapon from being used against Detroit.
The film was directed by Camille Delamarre, his first feature, and written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, with Besson also producing. Paul Walker plays Damien, David Belle plays Lino and RZA plays Tremaine, heading a cast of 26 credited performers. Made for a budget of 28 million dollars, it earned around 71 million dollars worldwide, a return that outweighed its cost. Audience scores sit in the middle: 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb across more than 43,000 votes and 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB from a smaller sample. A film critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 99 reviews places professional assessment below the audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is a remake of the French film "District 13" (2004), in which David Belle played the same role.
- David Belle does not speak English fluently, and his speech had a strong French accent during filming. To make his character more convincing, Vin Diesel dubbed all of his lines.
- When Lino and Lola kidnap Tremaine, Lola puts the gearshift into 'Drive' and then steps on the gas, but the car drives in reverse.
- When Damien and Lino crash a large van into a brick house, shots from inside the vehicle are shown; at this moment, it is visible that it is actually the interior of a Mustang GT350, not the van.
- Throughout the film, the characters receive numerous blows to the jaw, nose, and other parts of the body, but none of them seem to feel any pain.
- When Damien jumps from the roof after Lino, he grabs the windowsill with a lot of shards of broken glass. Logically, his hands should have been cut and wounded, but in subsequent shots his hands and fingers are intact.
- At 1:12:20, a couple of minutes before the main characters' fight, Damien briefly shows a facial wound that he will only receive during the fight itself.
