Post Grad follows Ryden Malby, a recent college graduate whose carefully arranged future collapses almost as soon as she collects her diploma. The publishing job she expected goes to a rival classmate, and without it she cannot keep the apartment she had lined up, so she moves back into her childhood home. There she lives with her father Walter, her mother Carmella, her younger brother Hunter and her grandmother Maureen, a household whose eccentric habits complicate her job hunt. Her longtime friend Adam stays close by her side, while a new neighbour offers a different kind of distraction. The film is a comedy about a young woman whose plans keep giving way to circumstances she did not anticipate.
Vicky Jenson directed, working from a screenplay by Kelly Fremon Craig, with Ivan Reitman, Joe Medjuck and Jeffrey Clifford producing. It was Jenson's fourth feature as director, arriving between Shark Tale and Spellbound. Alexis Bledel plays Ryden, with Zach Gilford as Adam, and Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch, Bobby Coleman and Carol Burnett as her family. The large credited cast and crew point to a sizeable studio production, and at 89 minutes the film moves briskly through its comic and romantic beats.
On IMDb it holds 5.3 from around 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 5 out of 10 from 327 votes, indicating modest audience approval. A critics' rating of 3.9 from 100 reviews places it lower still. Against a budget of 15 million dollars, its worldwide box office of about 6 million dollars shows it did not recover its costs.
