Tamako Kitashirakawa is a high school senior in the Usagiyama shopping district, where her family runs a mochi shop. She spends her days on the family business, her baton club and her friends, and has never noticed that her childhood friend Mochizo Oji is in love with her, though everyone around them seems to know. When Mochizo reveals his feelings and makes plans to leave for Tokyo to study, Tamako has to work out what she feels and what she wants for her own future, at a point when graduation is pushing her whole circle toward change.
Tamako Love Story is a 2014 anime feature from Kyoto Animation and Animation DO, running 83 minutes. It continues the story of the Tamako Market series, returning to its cast and setting while concentrating on Tamako and Mochizo. Naoko Yamada directed it, placing it second in the run of her features, between K-ON! The Movie and A Silent Voice: The Movie; Reiko Yoshida wrote the screenplay, and Aya Suzaki and Atsushi Tamaru lead the voice cast as Tamako and Mochizo.
The film took about 1 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure that fits its status as a continuation aimed at viewers of the series rather than a wide standalone release. On TMDB it holds a 7.2 out of 10 from just over two hundred votes, a small but clearly positive sample.
