Baaria is a Sicilian family saga spanning three generations, set in the town of Bagheria near Palermo and moving from the 1930s through the 1980s. At its centre is Peppino, who grows up in poverty as the son of a shepherd. Witnessing fascism, hunger and social injustice, he joins the Communist Party and throws himself into politics, a commitment that increasingly pulls him away from his wife Mannina and his family. Around his story, the film traces the loves, dreams and disappointments of a whole community across decades of Italian history.
The film was directed and written by Giuseppe Tornatore. It is his seventh feature, arriving after The Unknown Woman and before The Best Offer. Francesco Scianna plays Peppino, with Margareth Madè as Mannina and Salvatore Ficarra as Nino Terranuova. The production, mounted by Quinta Communications and Medusa Film, had a budget of around 30 million dollars and took about 16 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 674 votes. Its film critics' rating stands at 5.4 out of 10 from 11 reviews, well below the audience score. Running 160 minutes, it blends comedy, drama and romance.
