Jauja

In 1882, a Danish engineer named Gunnar Dinesen is working in Patagonia, where the Argentine army is waging a campaign against the region's indigenous population. His teenage daughter Ingeborg has come with him. When she falls for a young soldier and the two run away together, Dinesen sets out across the desert to find her, a search that takes him through an empty landscape where the tracks of others, including a soldier named Zuluaga, keep surfacing. The film is a Western-inflected drama about a father's pursuit of his daughter and about a land being taken from its inhabitants.

Jauja is directed by Lisandro Alonso, who wrote the screenplay with Fabián Casas. It is the first of three features he has directed, followed by Eureka and Double Freedom. Viggo Mortensen plays Dinesen, with Viilbjørk Malling Agger as Ingeborg, Ghita Nørby, Adrián Fondari and Esteban Bigliardi in supporting roles. The production involved companies and funding from a large group of countries, among them Argentina, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, Brazil and the Netherlands.

On IMDb, the film holds a critics' rating of 7.2 from 69 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating stands at 6.5 from 136 votes. The gap suggests that reviewers responded more favorably to the film than general viewers did.
